Native plants workshop: Sunday, March 8, 2026, 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at The Ferry House, Maidsville, West Virginia. Celebrate the coming of spring while learning about native plants. This workshop will help you propagate and grow perennial, biennial, and annual self-sowing native plants from seed. The focus will be on plants native to north-central West Virginia with special emphasis on: 1) winter sowing perennials that require a short chill period; 2) starting seeds indoors that require no chilling; and 3) the creation of “soft landings” beneath trees for overwintering insects. You’ll leave the workshop with tons of information and resources, packets of seeds, a planted jug of a locally native species, and a 6-pack of planted seeds to nurture indoors. Additional packets of seed from Prairie Moon Nursery will be available for separate purchase. Milkweed Rising Studio art (spring greetings cards, mandala stickers, and glass cabochon magets) will also be available for sale.

Do I Need to Pre-Register? Yes, you'll need to pre-register and pre-pay online. This helps keep me organized the day of the workshop.
When: Sunday, March 8, 2026, 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. (Please arrive around 12:45 or so to get settled before the workshop begins.)
Where: The Ferry House, 88 Lazzelle Union Rd, Maidsville, WV 26541. (Clicking the link will open up Google Maps to show you the location and directions in a new window.) Google Maps will get you to The Ferry House, but your iPhone Maps App will not. If you are unfamiliar with the location, please put the address into Google Maps before you head out so you're oriented. Please contact me before the day of the class if you need help with directions. I won't have an assistant on the day of the workshop so won't be able to help you navigate on the day of the class.
Bring: If you have gallon milk jugs, please bring them along to plant or share with others. Rinse and discard the cap or use it for another purpose. Bring cash or a card if you'd like to plant additional jugs or 6-packs ($5 each), buy additional packets of seeds ($1-$2 each), or purchase cards, stickers, or magnets from Milkweed Rising Studio.
Provided: 1) Everything needed to winter sow a gallon jug of native wildflower seeds; 2) everything needed to seed a 6-pack; 3) a cultural guide and illustrated seed catalog from Prairie Moon Nursery, 4) a seed-starting basics brochure, 5) free packets of seeds to try at home, and 6) a printed handout of info and tips specific to my experience growing native plants in Monongalia County.
Class Size: The class will be limited to 15 people, so register early.
Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Cancellations with refund will be accepted up to March 1 at midnight (the credit card fee of $1-$3 will be deducted), or you're welcome at any time to transfer your registration to someone else for free as long as they're at least 16 years old. In case of weather bad enough to make travel unsafe, the workshop will be rescheduled and you'll have the option of either attending on the new day or receiving a full refund. Cancellations you make after March 1 will not be refunded.
