About the art. The abstract coleus art on this card, titled Coleus Fantasy, was created from a photo of fancy coleus taken at the West Virginia Botanic Garden in Morgantown. As part of a summer 2026 exhibition of Blanche Lazzell’s white-line woodblock prints, coleus joined other bold annual plants in a recreation of the artist’s iconic Provincetown, Massachusetts, studio garden.

A native of Maidsville, West Virginia, Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956) was one of the state’s most influential artists. Best known for her modernist woodblock prints, Lazzell produced both abstract and two-dimensional figurative works composed of simple lines and blocks of color outlined in unprinted write.

Lazzell often used maroon and deep reds in her works. For example, The White Petunia (cut in 1932 and printed in 1954) features imagery of white petunias and red hollyhocks set against a finely balanced pattern of black, aqua, yellow, and deep maroon geometric shapes.
