Great horned owl mandala fine art card digitally printed using pigment inks on silky, bright white, acid-free paper. Folded card is 5.25" by 5.25" and comes with a beautifully made, bright white envelope. The paper is super smooth, not slick, and takes gel, ballpoint, and other inks well.

The primary photograph of a great horned owl used to create the artwork is printed on the back of the card with the photo location and a little story about the symbology included in the art. Interior of the card is blank or choose a message from the list below. The card and envelope are packaged together in a plastic sleeve and mailed in a stiffened mailer. Note: one or two cards are shipped USPS First Class without tracking. Three or more cards are shipped via the most economical means, which usually includes tracking.

About the art. The digital collage on this card, titled Dreams of the Hunt, was created from this photo of Phoenix, the great horned owl at Deep Creek Lake State Park Aviary in western Maryland. This artwork suggests an eye that incorporates eight blind owls with an image of Phoenix’s good eye at center. The constellation Orion the Hunter glows in the blind owl’s “mind’s eye”.

Phoenix, like his fiery namesake, rose from the ashes of his old life to be reborn an ambassador at the aviary. He was found with a badly broken wing, a damaged beak, and a swollen eye. After losing the sight in his eye, Phoenix was no longer able to hunt and was deemed non-releasable. The great horned is the heaviest owl in North America and hunts small to medium sized mammals, birds, and reptiles out and about in forest or field at night. It’s at night, too, that you’ll hear the great horned owl’s distinctive deep hoots.
