Winter Solstice Native Plants Workshop (In-Person) – 12/22/24

Native plants workshop: Sunday, December 22, 2024, 1-3 p.m. at The Ferry House in Maidsville, West Virginia. Celebrate Winter Solstice in community while learning about native plants and starting your winter sowing, which is traditionally done on the solstice. This workshop will help you propagate and grow perennial, biennial, and annual self-sowing native plants from seed. The focus will be on plants native to north-central West Virginia. You’ll leave the workshop with tons of information and resources, packets of seeds, and a planted jug of a locally native species (several choices will be available). Additional packets of seed from Prairie Moon Nursery will be available for separate purchase. Solstice, Yule, and Christmas cards, mandala stickers, and some cabochon magets will also be available for sale.

Do I Need to Pre-Register? You can up to the time of the workshop or just walk in at The Ferry House.
When: Sunday, December 22, 2024, 1-3 p.m.
Where: The Ferry House, 88 Lazzelle Union Rd, Maidsville, WV 26541. Note! The Google Maps will get you to The Ferry House, but your iPhone Maps App will not. The small white house is on the river side of Route 100, just past the I-79 overpass if you're coming from Westover. Put the address into Google Maps before you head out so you'll be oriented.
Bring: If you have gallon milk jugs, please bring them along to plant or share with others. Rinse and discard the cap or use it for another purpose. Bring cash if you'd like to plant additional jugs ($7 each), buy additional packets of seeds ($1-$2 each), or purchase Solstice cards or magnets ($5 each).
Provided: 1) Everything needed to winter plant a gallon jug of native wildflower seeds; 2) a cultural guide and illustrated seed catalog from Prairie Moon Nursery, 3) a seed-starting basics brochure, 4) free packets of seeds to try at home, and 5) a printed handout of info and tips specific to my experience growing native plants in Monongalia County.
Class Size: The class will be limited to 11 people, so register early.
Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Cancellations will be accepted up to a week before the event, or you're welcome at any time to transfer your registration to someone else as long as they're at least 16 years old. In case of weather bad enough to make travel unsafe, the workshop will be rescheduled and you'll have the option of either attending on the new day or receiving a full refund.
