Native plants workshop: Saturday, December 13, 2025, 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Canyon Presbyterian Church, Morgantown, West Virginia. Celebrate the lengthening of the days while learning about native plants and begin your winter sowing, which is traditionally started on or around the winter solstice. This workshop will help you propagate and grow perennial, biennial, and annual self-sowing native plants from seed. The focus will be on plants native to north-central West Virginia with special emphasis this year on the creation of “soft landings” beneath trees for overwintering insects. You’ll leave the workshop with tons of information and resources, packets of seeds, and a planted jug of a locally native species (several choices will be available). Additional packets of seed from Prairie Moon Nursery will be available for separate purchase. Solstice, Yule, and Christmas cards, ornaments, mandala stickers, and glass cabochon magets will also be available for sale.

Do I Need to Pre-Register? Yes, you'll need to pre-register and pre-pay online. This helps keep me organized the day of the workshop.
When: Saturday, December 13, 2025, 1:00 - 3:30 p.m. (Please arrive around 12:45 or so to get settled before the workshop begins.)
Where: Canyon Presbyterian Church, 766 Canyon Rd, Morgantown, West Virginia 26508. (Clicking the link will open up Google Maps to show you the location and directions in a new window.) If you are unfamiliar with the location, please put the address into Google Maps before you head out so you're oriented. Note the church is in the big curve on Canyon Road, so drive carefully. We will be in the community room at the church. Park in the lot and enter through the glass door at basement level, which opens into the community room. Please contact me before the day of the class if you need help with directions. I won't have an assistant on the day of the workshop so won't be able to help you navigate the day of the class.
Bring: If you have gallon milk jugs, please bring them along to plant or share with others. Rinse and discard the cap or use it for another purpose. Bring cash or a card if you'd like to plant additional jugs ($5 each), buy additional packets of seeds ($1-$2 each), or purchase cards, stickers, or magnets from Milkweed Rising.
Provided: 1) Everything needed to winter plant a gallon jug of native wildflower seeds; 2) a cultural guide and illustrated seed catalog from Prairie Moon Nursery, 3) a seed-starting basics brochure, 4) free packets of seeds to try at home, and 5) a printed handout of info and tips specific to my experience growing native plants in Monongalia County.
Class Size: The class will be limited to 15 people, so register early.
Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Cancellations will be accepted through Monday, December 8, 2025, at midnight with a $2 cancellation fee to cover credit card charges. Alternatively, you're welcome at any time to transfer your registration to someone else as long as they're at least 16 years old. In case of weather bad enough to make travel unsafe, the workshop will be rescheduled and you'll have the option of either attending on the new day or receiving a full refund.
