Basket Weaving Workshop: Sunday, June 7, 2026, 1-4:30 p.m. at The Ferry House in Maidsville, West Virginia.
Just in time for harvesting your summer herbs and leafy greens, weave a reed herb basket with an oak D-style handle. This substantial basket is 10″ across, 16 1/2″ long, and 12″ high to the top of the handle. A selection of dyed reed will be available should you want to add a few colorful weavers to truly personalize your creation. Skills learned or practiced: weaving a rectangular base with flat reed, applying D handles, continuous (or plain) weave over an odd number of stakes, cut-and-tuck finishing, and rim lashing.
This make-and-take workshop is appropriate for crafty adult beginners, but any level student is welcome. In addition to your finished basket, you’ll also receive a sheet of illustrated instructions and the web address for purchase of additional materials, should you be inspired to make more baskets.
Please register and pre-pay here up to one day prior to the workshop. This class is limited to 12 students. Because I need to prepare materials in advance, I’ll not be able to take walk-ins. Please arrive by 12:45 so you’ll have time to get settled before class starts at 1:00. You’ll need to bring a few tools, which are listed below.

Do I Need to Pre-Register? Yes, you must pre-register on this site and pre-pay. (If you sign up on Eddie's site but not here, you're not actually registered and a seat won't be saved for you. Sorry for any confusion.)

When: Sunday, June 7, 2026, 1-4:30 p.m. (arrive by 12:45 p.m.)
Where: The Ferry House, 88 Lazzelle Union Rd, Maidsville, WV 26541. (Clicking the link will open up Google Maps to show you the location and directions in a new window.) Google Maps will get you to The Ferry House, but your iPhone Maps App will not. If you are unfamiliar with the location, please put the address into Google Maps before you head out so you're oriented. Please contact me before the day of the class if you need help with directions. I won't have an assistant on the day of the workshop so won't be able to help you navigate on the day of the class.
Bring: Reed is woven wet so you'll need a heavy bath or beach towel for your lap. Please bring a heavy pair of scissors to cut reed and a flat-head (or slotted) screwdriver with an approximately 1/4" blade. I'll have a limited number of small awls available to use when adding the rim, but if you have one, you should bring along your own awl, icepick, or small Phipps-head screwdriver. Some buckets will be provided but if you have a 5-gallon bucket, please bring it.
Provided: 1) All the reed needed to complete one basket; 2) an oak D-style handle, 3) a written sheet of instructions to take home, 4) use of tools while in class.
Class Size: The class will be limited to 12 people, so register early.
Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Cancellations with a refund will be accepted up to June 1 at midnight (a small credit card fee processing fee will be deducted), or you're welcome at any time to transfer your registration to someone else for free as long as they're at least 14 years old. In case of weather bad enough to make travel unsafe, the workshop will be rescheduled and you'll have the option of either attending on the new day or receiving a full refund. Cancellations you make after June 1 will not be refunded.
