Pinned Specimen mandala, part of a tribute to modernist artist Blanche Lazzell, is digitally printed using pigment inks on silky, bright white, acid-free paper. Folded card is 5.25" by 5.25" and comes with a beautifully made, bright white envelope. Perfect for an everyday note or birthday card for just about anyone. The photograph I used to create the mandala is printed on the back of the card with the photo location and a little story about Blanche Lazzell and her use of hollyhock motifs in her artwork. Interior of the card is blank or choose a message (choices are below). The paper is super smooth, not slick, and takes gel, ballpoint, and other inks well. The card and envelope are packaged together in a plastic sleeve and mailed in a stiffened mailer.

Framing. This card is created using high-quality materials, such as might be used in a museum. The print is sharp, bright, and frameable. To protect the vibrancy of the artwork, I frame using UV glass or acrylic, and I recommend it. If you use plain glass or acrylic, make sure you hang this sweet, little piece and all your beautiful art away from direct sunlight.

About the art. The digital collage on this card, titled Pinned Specimen, was created from a photo taken at the West Virginia Botanic Garden in Morgantown. As part of a summer 2026 exhibition of Blanche Lazzell’s white-line woodblock prints, hollyhocks joined other bold annual plants in a recreation of the artist’s iconic Provincetown, Massachusetts, studio garden.

A native of Maidsville, West Virginia, Blanche Lazzell (1878-1956) was one of the state’s most influential artists. Best known for her modernist woodblock prints, Lazzell produced both abstract and two-dimensional figurative works composed of simple lines and blocks of color outlined in unprinted write. She also painted in oils; one of her most well-known paintings is simply titled Hollyhocks (1917). Tall sprays of hollyhock are rendered in bright daubs of red, pink, and peach against the shell pink end wall of a house. Painted in the Fauvist style, elements of the painting are edged in dark hues, rather than white.
