This workshop will help guide you in the selection of native shrubs and small trees to replace all those burning bushes and barberries you’ve been meaning to remove. In addition to introducing a list of appropriate substitutions and their value to insects, birds, and other wildlife, we’ll explore terms like “straight species”, “cultivar”, “nativar”, and “hybrid”. You’ll learn how to tell when a named selection is ecologically okay and when it’s not, and will gain confidence in making choices at the nursery.
For our make-and-take activity, you’ll learn how to start native woody plants from seed, an economical choice when planting a thicket for the birds or a large landscape bed. Seeds from several native shrubs will be available and you’ll be invited to choose two. Seeds will be planted into milk jugs or packaged to cold stratify the day of the workshop. All participants will also be offered a rooted elderberry cutting to take home and plant.

Do I Need to Pre-Register? Yes, you'll need to pre-register and pre-pay online. This helps keep me organized the day of the workshop.

Bring: Bring a pen or pencil to take notes and a milk jug or similar plastic container, which you will craft into a mini-greenhouse. Do not cut the jug or container before the workshop, just take off and discard the lid.
Provided: A printed handout of info and tips specific to growing native trees and shurbs in north-central West Virginia. Seeds, sand, potting mix, bags, and other supplies needed for the planting project. You'll also be offered a rooted elderberry cutting to take home and plant (requires a bit of space away from marauding deer.)
Class Size: The class will be limited to 16 people, so register early.
Cancellation and Transfer Policy: Cancellations with refund will be accepted up to May 10 at midnight (a small deduction will be taken for the credit card fee), or you're welcome at any time to transfer your registration to someone else for free as long as they're at least 16 years old. In case of weather bad enough to make travel unsafe, the workshop will be rescheduled and you'll have the option of either attending on the new day or receiving a full refund. Cancellations you make after May 10 will not be refunded.
