This honeybee carrying a full load of nectar was gorgeous in the strong afternoon sunlight. She was working a very pink wiegela that was in full bloom on my Pleasant Hill property in West Virginia. Although this is a rural area without much commerical agriculture and seemingly ample nectar-producing blooms, the populations of honeybees here have become quite constricted over the years. Mites have been implicated in honeybee deaths, but it has also finally been confirmed that persistent, systemic insecticides like neonicotinoids are devastating North American pollinator populations. You can help the honeybees in your own backyard by buying and planting only plants that are free of systemic insecticides and by not using these pesticides on your property.
