Red-tailed hawk mandala art celebrates the cycles of life with four stations represented. It was created using a photo of Clarice, a red-tailed hawk who lived at the Deep Creek State Park (Maryland)  Aviary. The 5.25″ by 5.25″ card is printed on acid-free paper using pigment inks. The photo of Clarice is printed on the back of the card with a short biography of her life.

About the art. The digital collage on this card, titled Life Cycle, was created from this photo of Clarice, a resident red-tailed hawk at the Deep Creek Lake State Park Aviary in western Maryland. This artwork represents the stages of life: childhood (east), young adulthood (south), middle age (west), old age (north).

Clarice was the first bird introduced to the aviary and shared space with another red-tailed hawk named Junior. Hawks and eagles are called raptors, from the Latin word for “seize” or “plunder.” The term is apt, for hawks like Clarice drop from the sky to seize prey with strong, curved talons. Chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, snakes, lizards, and other birds make up most of a red-tailed hawk’s diet.

Damage to Clarice’s left wing, kept her from flying well enough to hunt, but didn’t diminish her fierce demeanor. Clarice passed away in October 2023.
