Description
I created Ephemeral Joy from a photo of a sunflower that volunteered to grow amongst my Brussels sprouts. Yellow, especially this strong shade of gold, is usually associated with joy; however, as I was working this piece, I felt the joy here was just a little bit subdued. The low lighting when I shot this photo had desaturated and flattened the exuberant gold, taking just a bit of the happy edge off and keeping the joy restrained. As I worked the piece, the petals of the flower became more and more tissue-like until they became almost light and layered. This brought to mind the ephemeral quality of joy…it pops up, it fleets, it dodges, it evaporates, only to pop up again, dance around us, and disappear again. I’ve decided that’s fine with me, though, as the contrast between the joyous moments and the not so much makes the happy bits of life that much sweeter.
Enjoy this piece as a high-quality 10″ x 10″ giclee print on fine watercolor paper, beautifully prepared in a varnished cherry-tone wood frame with acid-free, round-cut green mat and UV acrylic glazing. The finished size is approximately 12″ x 12″, including the frame—big enough to allow you to dive in and really enjoy all the fine detail of the mandala. If you plan to use or gift this mandala as a mediation piece, this is a nice size. A copy of the original photo and my artist statement are included on the back.
